UPDATE: Levels of Software Section (an overview of computer hardware) LOCATION: PG 94-95 SUGGESTED UPDATE: The basic of the hardware discussion remains true but is quite dated. The following should be added:
- more information on computer specifications and how they relate to software (eg requirements to run certain programs)
- running software from a server or using any kind of 'thin client' is not mentioned and network connectivity is never mentioned. Dfferent varieties of internet connectivity is a must to discuss, given how key it is.
In the discussion of computer operating systems, only 'Windows' and 'Macintosh' OS's are mentioned. Open source OSes such as EduBuntu Linux(a specific distribution of Linux for education purposes should be at least briefly covered, because of their value.
UPDATE: The Computer as Curricular Tool LOCATION: PG 96-97 SUGGESTED UPDATE: This section needs to be rewritten to add web-based curriculum approaches such as blogs, wikis :-), shared document collaboration over something like GoogleDocs. The hypermedia discussion should be absolutely dominated by web-based approaches.
UPDATE: Educational Software Suggestions LOCATION: PG 98-101 SUGGESTED UPDATE:
Because all of the mentioned software was dated and there is any number of commercial software solutions, rather than directly updating these, here is a list of some opensource or web-based (ie free) replacements for the suggested software:
Behaviorist Software Example Replacement: GCompris - educational suite for children 6-12 www.starfall.com - best phonemic based reading-learning site Simulations (constructivist): OpenTTD - open source construction and transport simulations Simutrans - similar to OpenTTD. Lincity city-building game. OpenCity - 3D city-building game. Micropolis - SimCity clone. Darwinbots - AI simulator.
Constructivist Graphics (replacement for KidPix) TuxPaint- freeware/opensource KidPix style graphics construction
